Whilst working on this project I want to constantly keep the work by these two men in mind. I love the visual styles that they created and how it syncs with sound. I'm going to try and assimilate their styles and unashamedly reference them and use them for inspiration. The reason I want to do this is because the material that these guys created is amazing and way ahead of it's time.
Both artists works instantly made me think of a bunch of music videos from more recent times. Here's just a few examples from the past few decades:
The Residents - Its a Man's Man's Man's World 1984
(note the tubes on the blue guys face, this is reminiscent of McLaren & Lye scratching and drawing directly on top of film)
Takako Minekawa - Milk Rock 1997
(this video echoes back to a lot of McLarens work, look at Dots earlier on in this post)
MIA - Boyz 2007
(another modern, digital variant of the material that Lye and McLaren were producing over 50 years ago)
